It was slightly before noon and Mercat de Santa Caterina was still bustling with activities. My partner and I saw a packed bistro located within the market. It has bar seating, and serves reasonably priced food. Upon closer look at its menu, we decided that we would come back later when the lunchtime crowd thinned down. That was a big mistake.
When we returned at about 2pm, we were right about the crowd. But we did not anticipate that most of the food was sold out too. At La Torna, they source their ingredients everyday and every thing is fresh. That explains why the locals and tourists enjoy their food so much.
Nevertheless, we sat down and ordered whatever was available. The food is simple and unpretentious. Do not expect fanciful plating. However, you can look forward to food in its natural flavour enhanced with minimal amount of seasoning.
The seared squid is so fresh and mouth-watering! Throughout my trip, this is the best squid that I’ve ever tasted. The squid’s natural flavour is enhanced by the humble olive oil, sea salt and cut chives. The meat is very succulent and juicy. The taste is just, heavenly. This is a definitely must-have if you ever visit the bistro.
The meatballs with potatoes is just as gorgeous. Cooked in a tomato-based sauce with some herbs and spices, this dish is extremely tasty. The meatballs are precooked and heated up when there is an order. Despite that, they are soft and moist. For a meat lover, this is outrageously good.
The monkfish tail is prepared similarly to the squid. Without a doubt, the fresh monkfish is simply luscious with olive oil and sea salt.
La Torna has received many great reviews from tourists and locals. And if there’s a need, please queue. You will not regret the time you spend drooling over other diners’ food.
