Whenever I feel like having a light meal, the first thought that comes to my mind is Pho, a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup. This popular noodle dish is cooked in a meat broth and served with lots of fresh herbs, rice noodles and either sliced beef or chicken. It’s a very light dish yet rich in flavours.

In full bloom – Saigon Lotus at Marina Square Mall, Singapore
Recently, I visited Saigon Lotus at the Marina Square Mall after visiting an art exhibition within the vicinity. That’s when I discovered that they have a set-menu promotion. For $16.65nett, you get an appetiser (pork spring roll or Vietnamese rice paper roll), a bowl of noodles (chicken, sliced beef or egg), and a drink or dessert.
Pork Spring Roll
Coated with a thin layer of batter and fried till golden brown, the outer layer of the pork spring roll is crispy yet not oily. The fish sauce marinated pork meat is tender. It is so delectable that I wanted more. The Vietnamese rice paper roll is refreshing and equally good. The filling has prawns, lots of crunchy vegetables and fresh herbs. Great for the super health-conscious eaters.
Vietnamese Rice Paper Roll
Accompanied with bean sprouts, onions and lots of other herbs, the sliced beef noodle, Pho, is extremely scrumptious. The broth is delicate yet not lacking in taste.
Beef Pho
What’s more is that there is a generous serving of rice noodles. My partner, who was with me, couldn’t even finish the noodles.
Thank goodness, we opted for the drink instead of the dessert. This is because by the time we finished our main course, we couldn’t stomach any dessert.
Saigon Lotus is located in the recently revamped Dining Edition section of Marina Square mall. It took us some time for us to find it because it’s hidden behind some other eateries. But the economical set-menu and great food are more than enough to compensate the short search. Saigon Lotus is blooming beautifully and this Vietnamese joint is definitely worth repeat visits.
